Project background

In the course "Product Interaction and Scene Design", we visited the offline stores of IKEA and MUJI on the spot, collected a lot of ideas through on-site touch and photos, and tried to find design opportunities in the two brands through brainstorming and summary.


Brand background

IKEA is a leading global furniture and homeware retailer headquartered in Sweden. Ikea is known for its unique design, affordable products and customer self-assembly business model. Since its founding in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA has grown from a small mail-order company to an international household brand.

Characteristics of IKEA

  1. Simple and modern design
    IKEA products are mainly in Nordic style, emphasizing functionality, simplicity and beauty, and are suitable for the needs of different families.

    IKEA provides affordable home solutions through mass production and cost control.

    IKEA's store design provides customers with an immersive shopping experience, including showrooms and children's playgrounds. Its food section is particularly popular, with Swedish meatballs being a signature item.

Design process

Discover

We generated a lot of ideas through brainstorming, sorted out and compared, and finally focused on pet products. We found that MUJI has a lot of designs for pets, which is exactly what IKEA lacks. Finally, we use this as a starting point to add more creative points for IKEA.

Develop

Through the continuous spread of idea, we have a large number of ideas that refer to MUJI's pet bowl, pet bowl holder, pet bag, cat teasing stick, molar toy, nail clippers, cat litter shovel and other factors. Through comprehensive consideration of innovation and feasibility, we make the final selection, and we focus on the design of pet food products.

Owners often go out, pets for a long time alone but energetic, often appear home demolition behavior; Habitual eating too fast, prone to vomiting, so often lead to loss of appetite.

Pain point needs:

  • Need to grind teeth, eat slowly, eat small meals often
  • Gives the dog more companionship when the owner is away
  • Consume pet's energy and avoid home demolition

Zhang Xiaonan

Age: 26 years old
Basic information: white-collar workers, busy work, women living alone. Too busy with work to take care of the dog at home for a long time.

Pain point needs:

  • Need companion toys suitable for dogs
  • Need pet products with good appearance, quality and function
  • Good pet products on the market are too expensive

Concept

In the modern pet raising environment, the activity space of pets is relatively limited, the time of the owner is limited, and the problems such as single behavior and poor mental state are easy to appear. In order to improve the quality of life of pets, improve their health problems, enrich their daily experiences, and stimulate their natural and instinctive behaviors, we have carefully designed these three pet feeding and enriching products. Adhering to the concept of "making pet life more interesting and natural", the company aims to create an exclusive item for pets with the functions of entertainment, exploration and exercise by integrating innovative design.

  • Slow food toys for pets: to increase the time and difficulty of eating, to help dogs slow down the speed of eating, to promote digestive health, and to provide the function of grinding teeth and interacting with owners.
  • Pet slow food bowl: for the dog to eat to increase the obstacle, slow down the eating speed, protect the health of the dog.
  • Pet Press Toy: This pet press leaky food toy is designed to provide pets with a healthy, happy and challenging way to entertain.

1. Slow food toys for pets

Source of inspiration

Given the many negative effects that can come with a dog spending too much time alone at home, the dog may feel anxious and lonely due to being alone for too long, exhibiting symptoms of separation anxiety such as barking, damaging furniture, etc. Being alone for long periods of time can lead to destructive behavior: dogs may chew on furniture, shoes, or other objects to relieve boredom and anxiety. Therefore, design a toy that can attract the dog's attention through the toy, reduce the anxiety generated by the dog when it is alone, and increase the sense of interaction with the owner.

Based on the appearance of the original round leaky toy, the appearance design of the traditional hydrangea is used for IKEA to create a regional design for sale in specific regions. In addition, the emotional innovation and combination with the existing dog leaky food toys on the market, combined with the function of the dog's grinding rope can interact with the owner to improve the dog's social ability.

Sketch presentation

Version 1.0 is similar to related IKEA products, which does not require similar design and biomimetic design, but requires divergent thinking to carry out emotional innovative design. And hedgehog hands holding tassels, tassels are not suitable. After changing to the traditional Chinese hydrangea shape, whether it is the shape or tassel, tassel is more conducive to realizing the required functions of the product than 1.0. And more reflect regional characteristics.

2. Pet slow food bowl

Source of inspiration

The design inspiration of the product comes from the combination of the slow food mat, slow food bowl and bowl holder on the market, so as to make the pet's eating more healthy and convenient while improving the owner's food efficiency. The bowl holder is integrated into the bottom cushion height design and protects the dog's cervical vertebra.

Sketch presentation

The design sketch is based on the IKEA logo and bones, which are integrated with the stripes; The product material is polypropylene plastic, the size is set to 32cm*20cm*10cm.

3. Pet Press Toy

Source of inspiration

The inspiration comes from pet abundance toys, which mainly allow animals to obtain food through their own efforts, just like finding food in the natural environment. Animals need to roll and fiddle with the ball in order for food to fall out of the hole. In this way, the animal can extend the feeding time and increase its enjoyment of foraging.
At the same time, when I investigated IKEA offline, I found many dolls, which can be a good reference direction.

Looking back on the learning history of this course, I deeply feel that I have made remarkable progress and growth in the process of transforming ideas into practice. I have not only honed my software skills, but also developed my understanding of product structure, innovative design thinking and good teamwork spirit. These valuable gains will lay a solid foundation for my future development in the design field, and give me the confidence and ability to meet more complex and diversified design challenges, and create more valuable and more intimate product experiences for users.
